New Year New Beat: It's time to Clean out your makeup bag

There’s something powerful about the start of a new year. It’s a reset. A realignment. And one of my favorite rituals every January, before vision boards, before new launches, before new goals, is cleaning out my makeup bag.

Not just for aesthetics, but for energy, hygiene, and confidence.

Your makeup bag holds more than products. It holds habits. Old versions of you. Looks you’ve outgrown. And sometimes, let’s be real, things that should’ve been retired a long time ago.

So let’s get into it. Nikki style.

Step 1: Dump It All Out

First things first, empty the entire bag. Don’t edit as you go. Lay everything out where you can see it.

This moment is always eye opening. Products you forgot about. Shades you don’t even wear anymore. Lip glosses that separated in ways they shouldn’t have.

Ask yourself:

Do I still love this?

Do I still use this?

Does this still represent my current vibe?

If it doesn’t serve the version of you you’re stepping into this year, it’s a no.

Step 2: Check Expiration Dates

Makeup expires. Period.

Using old products can cause breakouts, irritation, and dull looking skin, and we’re not carrying that into the new year.

Here’s a simple guide:

Mascara lasts about three to six months

Liquid liners and concealer last six to twelve months

Cream products like blush, gloss, and foundation last six to eighteen months

Powders last eighteen to twenty four months

If it smells off, looks separated, or feels different than it used to, let it go.

Step 3: Clean What You’re Keeping

Now refresh what made the cut.

Wash your brushes and sponges thoroughly.

Wipe down palettes and tubes with alcohol.

Clean the inside of your makeup bag.

This step alone makes your makeup apply better. Clean tools equal smoother blends, better payoff, and healthier skin.

Step 4: Curate Your Go To Bag

This is where the magic happens.

Instead of overstuffing your bag, build a core lineup of products you actually reach for. Think one everyday lip combo, a reliable mascara, a blush that instantly brings life back to your face, and a gloss that makes you feel like that girl.

When your makeup bag is intentional, getting ready feels easier and you show up more confident.

Step 5: Set the Intention

As you put everything back, do it with intention.

Say it out loud if you need to.

This year, I’m showing up polished, confident, and taken care of.

Because how you treat your tools reflects how you treat yourself.

Final Word from Me

Cleaning out your makeup bag isn’t just a beauty task. It’s a reset ritual.

You’re making room for new looks, new energy, and new levels. And trust me, when your makeup is fresh, clean, and aligned with who you are now, it hits different.

New year. New beat. Same bad confidence.
